In the ever-evolving world of ministry, coming up with powerful sermon topics that resonate and connect with the congregation can be daunting. While the internet is a vast resource filled with sermon ideas, rooting our teachings in the Scriptures is essential. This article will provide established sermon topics and guide pastors on cultivating their own from the Holy Bible.

How to Come Up with Sermon Ideas

Pray

Every great sermon begins with a conversation with God. Before delving into topics or themes, a pastor should seek God’s guidance and direction. Prayer isn’t just about asking; it’s about listening. It’s through these moments of stillness that powerful sermon topics often emerge. Remember, our most profound insights and revelations come when we align our hearts with God’s will.

Read and Read and Read the Bible

The Bible isn’t just a source of sermon topics; it’s the lifeblood of every message you deliver. To tap into its depth, continuous reading and reflection are essential. The scriptures are vast, and each verse carries a multitude of lessons. By immersing yourself in the Word, you become better equipped to discern which parts of scripture your congregation needs to hear at any given moment. It’s not merely about identifying sermon ideas but uncovering the lessons God wants to share.

Make Devotion a Lifestyle

Consistent devotion is the bedrock upon which powerful sermon topics are built. Through regular prayer, reading, and reflection, you’ll find that sermon ideas will come to you naturally. Devotion isn’t just about personal spiritual growth but equipping yourself to lead others. As you grow in your relationship with Christ, you’ll find it easier to identify topics that resonate with your congregation.

Faith Sermon Ideas

  1. Triumphing over Fear through Faith. (Matthew 8:25–27, Psalm 23:4)

25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”  – Matthew 8:25–27

4 Even though I walk

 through the darkest valley,[a]

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me; your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

– Psalm 23:4

In our Christian journey, we cannot avoid seeing ourselves in fear. Depending on what we have been through, our traumatic experiences vary from one to the other. But no matter our fears, God has provided us the means to triumph over them through Faith.

The text in Matthew chapter 8 shows the disciples’ fear of the storm, and amidst their fear, God was able to demonstrate to us His power over our fears. He reminds us that our fear comes from our lack of faith. So, if we continue to grow our faith, we can overcome and triumph over our fears, just like how David declared it in Psalm 23. This text shows us the confidence of one with full faith and trust in the Lord God almighty.

  1. Growing in Faith. (Colossians 2:7)

7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

The Bible also stresses the need to continue nurturing our faith. How do we do that? As the text says, we must be rooted in Him. This text reminds us that one of the ways to grow in faith is to know Him more and more. And we can do that by reading the word of God.

The logic here is basic. If you’ve never known that God is our Jehovah Jireh, you would never trust Him to provide all your needs. You would never entrust Him with your finances and your career. The same goes for all of God’s attributes. If you’ve never read about it, you would not have the chance to experience and affirm its truth.

The text also says the words, “as you were taught…” This means we can also nurture our faith by listening to our earthly leaders whom God has appointed for us. Following their guidance, listening to our pastor’s sermons on faith is a straightforward way to nurture our spiritual growth.

  1. Unwavering Faith. (James 1:6, Matthew 21:21)

6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.James 1:6

21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. Matthew 21:21

In our Christian journey, a person might have come to the point of doubt and unbelief, leading to their falling away. You might have also met people who have lost their faith and are trying to get back on track. Knowing this, we can say that preaching to believers about unwavering faith is necessary for our present generation.

The texts above tell us that we must release all doubt to have unwavering faith. Releasing doubt and replacing it with unwavering faith is so powerful that, as the text says, we can move mountains. We can speak to our current situation and declare God’s promises, and it shall be so.

Youth Sermon Ideas: Bible Characters in Their Youth

  1. David

David, the youngest of eight sons, was a worshipper and a brave young shepherd. He loves to worship God with his harp while tending his father’s flock. And if any lion or bear tries to attack any of his father’s sheep, David will not hesitate to defend and save them from these predators.

In his teenage years, David was chosen by the prophet Samuel to be a king in 1 Samuel 16:12-13 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and a good appearance. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came on David from that day forward. So, Samuel arose and went to Ramah.”

At first, the prophet Samuel thought that God chose David’s older brother for he was well-built and a bit taller than David. But God told Samuel that it was David who would be king for God only looks at the heart and not on the outward appearance, just like what 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

  1. Daniel and his friends

Another beloved story in the Bible is in the book of Daniel. Many people would know the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when they were put in the fiery furnace. Even more, I would remember the story of Daniel in the lion’s den.

But when they were younger, they were offered food and drink that were against their traditional Jewish beliefs. With this, they stood for what they believed was right and requested that their diet be changed to something more familiar to them –– one that would keep them from breaking God’s commandments.

God favored and blessed them because they decided to honor God with their eating habits. He gave them knowledge, wisdom, and skill in learning.  Daniel 1:17 “17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.”

With this, the king found these four young men to be ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. Daniel 1:20 “In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.”

  1. Samuel the Prophet

Samuel was born as a gift from the Lord to his mother, Hannah. She promised to give him to the Lord to be raised by the priest Eli. Samuel grew and served, and when he was about 12 years old, he was awakened by the voice of the Lord calling to him in the night. Even as a boy,

Samuel learned to listen to the voice of the Lord. This began his preparation to become a prophet.

Samuel 3:4-10

“4 Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So, he went and lay down. 6 Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.8 A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So, Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

With all of these, we can see that the great Bible characters prepared for their lifetime service to the Lord when they were young. In your teens, you are old enough to learn about the Lord and do His will. Instead of waiting until you’re an adult, now is the perfect time to start living a righteous life.

Father’s Day Sermon Ideas

  1. David’s command to Solomon

1 Kings 2:1-4

1 When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son. 2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, 3 and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go 4 and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

Nearing his death, David commanded his son Solomon to be strong and act like a man. Not just that, he also told him to walk in obedience to God and keep his decrees and commands. Likewise, you can preach this passage to encourage fathers to obey God and keep his commands.

  1. The Father disciplines those he loves

Proverbs 3:11-12

11 My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

In this passage, God tells us that discipline and rebuke also express His love for us. With this, we shouldn’t be downhearted if we receive any form of discipline, for it is done with love by the Father.

  1. Abraham’s faithfulness in God’s command

Genesis 22:1-18

Sometime later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

We know that God, the perfect Father, sacrificed his only Son to die on the cross and pay for our sins. But before that event, God tested a certain father in the Old Testament. Abraham, a loving father to his son Isaac, was tested and commanded to sacrifice his only son for God.

Abraham continued his faith in God and followed His command without any resistance or doubt. Abraham’s faith was so big that he told his servant, “Stay here while I and the boy will go to the mountain and worship, but WE will come back to you.” He told his servant by faith that he and Isaac would come back. Aside from this, he also told the supposed burnt offering, his son Isaac, that God would provide for the burnt offering.

Likewise, we should follow Abraham’s example that no matter what circumstances we are in, we should always follow God’s command.

Mother’s Day Sermon Ideas

  1. MOTHERS ARE GOD’S CHANNELS FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S DESTINY

Ruth 3:1 One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for.

This specific verse tells us that the role of mothers is to become channels of God’s will for their children. Like Naomi, a mother should always prepare for their children’s well-being. And not just for the child’s well-being but also for the child’s service to God.

With this, mothers are destined to help their children become the people God designed them to be. And to help them in any circumstance they will encounter in their lives.

  1. MOTHERS SHOULD DEVELOP STRENGTH, DIGNITY, AND INTEGRITY AS PRIMARY QUALITIES

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.

26 When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.

27 She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.

28 Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her:

29 “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!”

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. 31 Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.

This passage teaches us the three qualities a mother should develop: Strength, Dignity, and Integrity. These qualities will make mothers become better people, not just for their husbands but for the entire family.

Aside from that, developing these qualities will make Godly mothers stand out from other capable women. Making them great examples of how a mother should be as defined by God in the Bible.

  1. MOTHERS ARE THE EPITOME OF EFFICACIOUS AFFECTION

John 19:25-27

25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

In this passage, we can read how Jesus addressed His mother’s needs. It is to have someone look out for her while Jesus returns to the Father in heaven. But this move of Jesus is caused by His mother’s love for Him. Mary gave birth to Him, cared for Him, and helped Him raise. And because of Jesus’ death on the cross, Mary was silently suffering a broken heart –– like being pierced with a sword (Luke 2:34,35)

Because of Mary’s love for His Son, Jesus answered her needs by allowing His disciples to become his sons. Likewise, a mother’s emotions can bring the best out of their children. With genuine love and care, mothers are considered the epitome of efficacious affection.

Sermons on Prayer

  1. Prayer should be made known

Philippians 4:6

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God”

This passage tells us that our prayers should be made known to God in everything. Pray for your survival needs, sorrow, satisfaction, concerns for others, and most importantly, our thanksgiving to God.

  1. Prayers should be done in faith

James 1:6-8

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let, not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

This passage tells us that it is highly important to have faith whenever we pray. Because our faith will make us trust that God will answer, hear, and fulfill our prayers.

  1. Prayers are guided by the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:26-27

“Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

If you don’t know what to pray, you should not worry because this passage tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us in our prayers. But this requires earnest and honest prayer to God. So, if we pray properly, God will undoubtedly give His Holy Spirit to guide us in our prayers.
